Meet Tommy
“I was born in a very small town in Texas. When I was 6, I was diagnosed with mild hemophilia after my cousin was tested at birth in a much bigger city. Living in a rural area, my parents and I needed to be knowledgeable about my bleeding disorder so we could educate our community about my needs and limitations.
I’ve been on a variety of treatments over the years to help me manage my bleeds, but I still didn’t feel like I had the protection I needed and wanted. Because of all the untreated bleeds I had when I was younger, my pain levels were starting to become problematic. I knew something needed to change. I had heard that a lot of people on prophylaxis have experienced a reduction in pain. With all my breakthrough bleeds and high pain levels, I thought I should talk to my doctor about switching to a prophy treatment.
As a big science nerd, I had been reading about ALTUVIIIO and how it was shown to have higher-for-longer factor levels in the near-normal to normal range, over 40%, for most of the week in adults. While I liked the on-demand data, I was more intrigued by the results of treating prophylactically.
I switched from on demand to prophylaxis treatment for the first time in my life at the age of 40 in 2023 when I started on ALTUVIIIO. I’ve found that infusing once a week isn’t all that difficult for me. I infuse on Tuesday, and even though I take my time, it only takes 6 or 7 minutes. Plus, I have fewer bleeds and I feel like I have less pain in my joints. Of course, this is my experience, and others’ may be different.
I'm an outdoorsman, so my joint health is especially important to me. For years, I’ve hiked in the mountains to go elk hunting, carrying a 40- to 60-pound pack 4 miles there and back. I’m thankful I’m now treating prophylactically because it gives me extra protection that I haven’t had for most of my life.
I know there are a lot of people with mild hemophilia who may have never considered going on prophylaxis. I know the switch from on demand can seem a bit daunting. I'm a firm believer that the chance of reducing breakthrough bleeds and the potential joint pain and damage that come from them is worth the change in routine.”
