Meet Chris R.
“I’m 66 years old and I have severe hemophilia A. I’ve tried 7 different treatments over my lifetime, switching as new treatments have been developed. I know that switching treatments can be a hassle, and that it may feel easier to stay with what you have. I can understand questioning whether switching is worth the trouble, but I’ve learned: if there’s a treatment out there that can give me the results I want, it’s worth a discussion with my doctor to make a change.
Before ALTUVIIIO, I was on another prophylaxis treatment, infusing 3 times a week with a trough level of 2%. When I heard about ALTUVIIIO, I was really excited about the 48-hour half-life, and keeping my Factor VIII levels over 40% for most of the week with a once-a-week infusion. I talked to my hematologist and my Sanofi CoRe Manager about it, and decided to make the switch. Sanofi Patient Support Services made the process of starting ALTUVIIIO and navigating my insurance coverage seamless.
Infusing once a week has been a great change for me. I feel really good about the bleed protection I have now, and I haven't had any bleeds while on ALTUVIIIO. My test results have shown that my trough levels are around 10% on Day 7.
Remember that each person’s hemophilia treatment plan may differ, so you need to work with your doctor to find a treatment plan that is right for you. As for me, I’m glad I switched.
Being on top of and consistent with my treatment and health is very important to me—especially at my age. I’m at a place where if I don’t stay active, then I’m not going to be active. So I try to get to the gym regularly, and that helps me have the mobility I need when I’m traveling, hiking, skiing, or participating in my local theater group. I couldn’t do any of this if I didn’t take my health and treatment seriously.
When I was younger, information and treatment options were limited. Now, we have resources and options. I want to encourage each of you to continue connecting with the hemophilia community, and if you aren’t happy with your current treatment, talk to your doctor about finding a treatment that’s right for you.”
