Meet Dajon
“I was diagnosed with severe hemophilia A when I was 13 months old. There was already a known case of hemophilia in my family—one of my older cousins—so once my mom saw similar symptoms, she made an appointment with my pediatrician. Once my pediatrician learned about my family history, she referred us to a pediatric hematologist for tests, which confirmed my diagnosis of severe hemophilia A.
I’ve tried a few different treatments over the years. The first and second treatments didn’t work for me, but I started my third recombinant factor product when I was 6, and it worked so well that I stayed on it for 20 years. And for most of that time, I infused every other day. Every other day for 20 years is a lot of pokes!
As I got older and aged out of pediatric care, I noticed that my treatment wasn’t working as well for me anymore because I was getting more bleeds. The prospect of switching was a lot to consider after so long on the same product. It was the first real major treatment decision I had to make. But I recognized the importance of what fewer infusion times and better protection could offer.
At the same time I was considering a treatment switch, I found out my recombinant factor product was going off the market. When I talked to my new hematologist, his first recommendation was ALTUVIIIO. He told me ALTUVIIIO is a once-weekly prophylaxis Factor VIII therapy. It was shown to keep factor levels higher for longer—over 40% for most of the week—in adults. We also discussed the common side effects, which are headache and joint pain.
Since starting ALTUVIIIO, I haven’t had any breakthrough bleeds. Of course, that’s just my experience. Dosing once weekly has been a significant change, especially compared to my previous treatment schedule. I’m able to schedule my time in ways that I’ve never experienced, and I appreciate the flexibility and independence it brings.
I enjoy my time at the gym, and I participate in community flag football games. Those activities are essential to me. Knowing I’m consistent with my treatment schedule keeps me grounded.
I’ve learned a lot about managing my hemophilia, and even though we say this a lot in our community, the best thing we can learn and remember is that hemophilia doesn’t define you. Finding the right treatment—and the right care team—can give you the support you need to grow and live the life you choose.”
